This year the students travelled North of the Border, to Scotland and in particular Leith, a suburb of Edinburgh and home of twins Craig and Charlie Reid, otherwise known as The Proclaimers! Stephen Greenhorn wove 18 of their songs into an amazing musical which we proudly presented as the area première of Sunshine On Leith, from 01 to 04 April, 2015.
It’s 2009 and we meet two young Soldiers: Ally and Davy, who are on patrol in Afghanistan, but they encounter an enemy ambush and not long after decide to leave the Army and return home to sunny Leith! They attempt to rebuild their lives, but things never run smoothly, and this jubilant and heartfelt story of a close-knit family, plus the three couples bound to it, illustrates the joys and heartache that punctuate all relationships. Each couple finds a different solution to their particular problem, but we see how the power of love overrides everything, even if it sometimes means letting go.
Interwoven throughout the story, we hear such catchy tunes as Over and Done With and Throw The ‘R’ Away, plus surprisingly beautiful Celtic ballads like Misty Blue and Make My Heart Fly, with the poignant Oh Jean, Letter From America and Sunshine On Leith, but it wouldn’t be the same without the memorable show-stopper: I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)!
Having received TWO nominations in the Rose Bowl Awards for Anything Goes, enthusiasm reigned supreme and we weren't dissapointed - with this show actually winning the award for Best Youth Production!
